“Green lane” for hiring immigrants in Portugal

March 24, 2025

The protocol provides for a final decision to grant a visa within 20 days of attending a consular post, but sets out a series of obligations for companies, from training to “adequate accommodation”.

The Portuguese government is negotiating a protocol to speed up the granting of visas to immigrants recruited by companies, in order to solve the lack of workers in key sectors of the economy. The aim is to create a rapid procedure for analysing visa applications for foreign citizens who come to carry out professional activities in Portugal, while ensuring that companies comply with obligations such as training and adequate accommodation.

The proposal recognizes the essential role of labour immigration in the country’s economic development, highlighting the significant contribution of immigrants to sectors such as agriculture and tourism. The government stresses that the diversity of skills and experiences brought by immigrants is fundamental to economic growth and the dynamization of the Portuguese labour market.

The new “green lane” for hiring immigrants represents a strategic opportunity for companies that need to reinforce their teams with international talent.
